Measurement - Volume

This week we have started exploring volume using non standard measurements and popcorn!!!

Firstly, we measured how many spoonfuls of kernels of popcorn were in a small bowl.  We used different sized spoons to understand that we need to use a standard measure to make a true measurement.
We then estimated which bowl would be filled exactly up to the top with the popped popcorn.
Well done to Blake and Pierre who made the closest estimate!

We then explored the volumes of popcorn that would fit in a range of different containers.

Basically we just had a heap of fun... and got to eat some popcorn afterwards!!!

Our learning outcomes for today were:
  • use non-standard volume units (cups, spoons, bowls) to fill a container and count the number used
  • recognise the need for a standard unit of volume
  • measure to the nearest litre and half litre by using litre containers to fill and count
Here are a few photos of our fun!
